Simoncelli tops 250cc timesheet on Friday morning

250cc World Champion Marco Simoncelli was quickest in the category´s first Free Practice session in Valencia.

Newly crowned 250cc World Champion Marco Simoncelli recorded the fastest time of the first quarter-litre session in Valencia, clocking a 1´51.909 lap in the morning run. The Italian was some four-tenths of a second faster than former title rival Mika Kallio, the winner of last year´s race.

The Metis Gilera man was the only rider to go round in under the 1´52 mark, on his sixteenth lap of the Valencia circuit. Behind Red Bull KTM rider Kallio was Thomas Luthi, whose last visit to the track in testing ended with a collarbone fracture for the Swiss rider.

2008 World Championship runner-up Alvaro Bautista placed fourth, with Julian Simon, Yuki Takahashi, Alex Baldolini, Roberto Locatelli, Alex Debon and Imre Toth also placing in the top ten.

The session took place on a damp track, following rain in both the 125cc and MotoGP openers.
