Rossi makes good start with 2009 M1

World Champion Valentino Rossi´s feeling with the updated Yamaha M1 for the 2009 season was positive on the first day of winter testing at Valencia on Monday.

Testing his new 800cc Yamaha prototype and the new specification Bridgestone tyres from the 2009 mono-brand suppliers World Champion Valentino Rossi was satisfied with how things went at the Ricardo Tormo circuit on the day after the season-concluding Gran Premio Parts Europe de la Comunitat Valenciana.

Having wrapped up his victorious 2008 campaign with another podium on Sunday Rossi undertook several test laps on his standard M1 on Monday before switching to the new bike later in the day. The Italian finished the afternoon third on the timesheet with a best time of 1´32.921, faster than his best lap in Sunday´s race.

Afterwards he commented, `The first impression with the new bike is positive because we have tried to work on the engine to improve acceleration and it is quite good on the exit from slow corners. The second thing is that we have modified something in the chassis to improve grip and under this point of view the feeling is good. On the first day I am already a little bit faster than with the old which is good. It is just a prototype but I think we are going in a good direction.´

The 29 year-old continued, `The other `big´ thing today of course is the new tyres and I am really happily surprised. This is not the best track to try them at as we don´t have so much data for here but anyway they feel very good. I was expecting less grip but we had a lot and everyone was fast today. The track conditions are a lot better today than they have been during the weekend so this makes a difference, but anyway we can already see that they are quite good. I think Bridgestone have done a good job but of course it will be hard to know for sure until we have been to some different tracks. We have to wait and see.´
