Steady as you go for new boys Canepa and Kallio

2009 MotoGP Rookies Niccolo Canepa and Mika Kallio undertook their first tests with the Alice Team on Monday.

Getting their first day of work with the Alice Team under their belts on Monday at Valencia Niccolo Canepa and Mika Kallio finished the first winter test session seventeenth and fifteenth respectively on the timesheet, both riders more than two seconds off pace-setter Casey Stoner´s time.

Although Canepa has ridden the Desmosedici before and Kallio is a rider of undoubted talent, blistering pace was not expected from either at this early stage in a period of transition for the young pair.

Finnish rider Kallio said goodbye to former employers KTM on Sunday before joining the Ducati family and at the end of Monday´s test he said of his new tools, `It´s a really powerful bike. It´s really fun to ride because you have to play with it a lot to use the characteristics in the best way.´

`Here, compared to the 250 machinery, you feel every little modification done on the set up when you go back on track. For this reason these first few days will be very important. I settled well in the new team and I am sure we will continue to work well in the new season.´

Meanwhile, fellow new boy Canepa added, `I already knew the Desmosedici GP8 but this is the first time that I have concentrated on the set up of the bike. In the last tests we mainly worked on the tyres and we didn´t have much time to modify the bike. For this reason I mainly focused on understanding the bike´s reaction to each modification and I am learning a lot.´
