Pons and Barbera team up for 2009

Pons and Barbera team up for 2009

The Pons Racing WRB team, managed by Sito Pons, have signed Hector Barbera for a new 250cc project in the 2009 World Championship.

Former 250cc World Champion Sito Pons has signed Hector Barbera for next year to ride for him in a new quarter litre class project under Pons Racing WRB management.

Barbera will ride Aprilia RSA machinery and will continue to be sponsored by clothing company PEPE. The Spanish rider is to work with the same technicians as in 2008, with renowned crew chief Rossano Brazzi at the helm.

Barbera, who is currently recuperating from a back injury sustained in Japan in September, is one of the most highly rated and exciting riders in the intermediate category. Despite missing the last four races of the year, he ended the 2008 season sixth in the general classification, having earned two poles and four podiums.

`Despite everything that has happened this has been a good year for me,´ said Barbera, who turned 22 on Sunday. `As the races have gone on I have realised how important the support of my sponsors has been. We have a special relationship and I am lucky to have the kind of support not many people can count on in this sport. One of the things that helped me the most when I was injured in Japan was knowing they were there for me.´

He continued, `I´m also very happy to have the opportunity to work together with Sito. He won two 250cc titles and he knows more about this game than anybody. I am convinced his experience can help me grow as a rider. I am just starting my rehabilitation now and I´m sure next year can be an incredible one for everybody involved.´

Former rider Pons – who won the 250cc title in 1989 and 1990 – returned to the World Championship this year after a short break from team management. He withdrew from MotoGP before the start of the 2006 season and came back this year in the 125cc class with the successful Jack&Jones WRB outfit.

`This has been a really nice season for me,´ revealed Pons. `On my return to the World Championship I have really got to know the 125cc class after so many years in MotoGP. Now I am excited about this new project, as much with the rider as with the group of sponsors headed by PEPE. They are all top-level companies that also maintain a real human aspect.´

`To have a rider like Hector in a category I know so well is a challenge I can´t wait to get started on. I think he is a rider with a lot of potential – he is still young but at the same time he has great experience. Hopefully I can bring him a little of what I have learnt over so many years dedicated to a sport that is my passion. I think together we can meet the objectives we set for ourselves and above all I hope we enjoy each and every Grand Prix.´
