Redding ups training in anticipation of title challenge

Blusens Aprilia rider doing double training in order to push for 125cc World Championship in 2009.

The 2008 Rookie of the Year in the 125cc class, Scott Redding has some big ideas for the upcoming campaign. The Briton has a new factory Aprilia RSA at his disposal with which to mount a title challenge, and his improvement in machinery is being matched by a more intense training schedule that has begun almost immediately after the final race of the year.

`Since Valencia I´ve just been training on my bike, even though it´s been pouring down with rain here,´ said Redding from his Gloucestershire home. `That´s what you have to do in order to improve. I am training double now compared with what I did to prepare for 2008, with a new trainer and a lot of running and biking.´

The teenager was the success story of the season in the lower cylinder category, making an instant impact with some speedy qualifying performances. Plans to split his time between the World Championship and the CEV Spanish series were quickly put to one side as Redding began to rack up some serious points, his amazing season peaking with a home victory at Donington Park.

Local attention had been centred on MotoGP rider James Toseland and Bradley Smith in the run-up to Redding´s famous June weekend, and the victory in the Midlands left even the Blusens Aprilia rider surprised. He had never ridden at the track on a 125cc bike, in contrast to the ironically more familiar Spanish circuits.

`I thought that maybe the first win would have come at Valencia, Barcelona or Jerez, tracks that I knew very well, so Donington was a bit unexpected,´ he notes. `But the season as a whole was even better than I expected, and it was a really good year.´

The Donington performance catapulted Redding into not only the history books, but also the collective conscience of the World Championship paddock. Loris Capirossi has become a fan of the rider some twenty years his junior, often found watching him on the monitor during races and practice sessions. Two other MotoGP riders are also on first name terms with the Briton.

`I hang out with James (Toseland) and Colin Edwards at the flyaways, although they have busy schedules and I don´t get to talk to them that much. As far as asking for pointers, they have just told me to give it full gas.´

A hand firmly on the throttle will certainly be required in 2009, a year in which the sensation of the 125cc series will be looking to mount a serious title challenge.

`The goal for me is to win the World Championship, but a solid target is to finish in the top three. I think that with this bike and team I have the package to do it,´ he says, and on past form one would be inclined to believe the statement.
