Speedy start for new lower cylinder category arrivals in Valencia

Alvaro Bautista and Bradley Smith fastest on first day of testing at Spanish circuit, with Talmacsi and Di Meglio making 250cc debuts.

A combined 125cc and 250cc test in Valencia began on Monday, with a selection of Aprilia riders from both categories performing laps at the Spanish circuit.

The fastest rider of the day was Alvaro Bautista, onboard the factory Aprilia RSA of the Aspar team. The Spaniard clocked a 1´37.1 lap of his home circuit, further preparing for another assault on the quarter-litre title in 2009.

Debut 250cc appearances came from Gabor Talmacsi and Mike di Meglio, the two most recent 125cc World Champions over a second down on Bautista´s time in their first ride with their new machinery. Talmacsi will ride with an Hungarian offshoot of the Mapfre Aspar team with a new number 28 livery, whilst 2008 125cc titlist Di Meglio joins up with the factory team itself.

Also joining up with the Aspar squad, Bradley Smith made his maiden outing with Jorge Martinez´ 125cc team. He was the quickest in the class with a 1´41.7 lap, nearly exactly the same time as that recorded by new teammate Julian Simon. Andrea Iannone and Sergio Gadea also took part in the first of two days of testing action.
