There were 17 MotoGP riders in attendance at the Andalucian venue, the only absentee being Tech 3 Yamaha rider Colin Edwards who had not been scheduled to participate – though his team-mate James Toseland did test on Monday despite a weekend chest infection, only to produce the slowest best time having completed 97 laps.
Behind the factory Yamaha riders on the timesheet was Casey Stoner, following his worst GP result since 2006 on Sunday – today the only Ducati rider in the top ten. His colleague Marco Melandri suffered more woes down in 13th as the only crasher of the day.
Fourth and fifth respectively were Sunday race crasher Randy de Puniet (Honda LCR) and John Hopkins (Kawasaki), both lapping within a second of Lorenzo's best effort as four manufacturers featured in the top five.
Spanish GP winner Dani Pedrosa was the eighth quickest participant, just behind experienced pair Loris Capirossi and Shinya Nakano, while Nicky Hayden and Andrea Dovizioso also featured in the top ten.
