Moving on up a possibility for Di Meglio
Newly-crowned 125cc World Champion Mike di Meglio has made overtures to a move up to 250cc for next season.
His mission accomplished in 125cc with a World Championship to his name, Mike di Meglio is looking at the possibility of a 250cc move for 2009 –be it with his current Ajo Motorsport associates or as part of a different outfit.
The Frenchman secured the 2008 lower cylinder category title with victory at Phillip Island last weekend, and admitted afterwards that his future was up in the air. A mutual understanding between himself and Team Manager Aki Ajo would facilitate his decision, despite the terms of his current deal.
`We have a two year contract with Mike, but I understand that he has spent a long time in this category and that he would want to move to 250cc,´ says the Finn on his current charge.
`We are looking to maybe move up too, but at the same time perhaps the changes to the 250cc class mean that it´s not a good choice for us to go up. If it´s with us or with another team, then we will support Mike in his decision.´
Whilst some have expressed surprise at the season experienced by Di Meglio, who previously held just a solitary wet weather victory before his revelatory year, Ajo was expectant of performances at least in the same ballpark as those of 2008.
`We didn´t expect to be World Champions, but at the end of last year we spoke to Mike and I believed that there was a chance of very good results –a top three or four in the standings. It is always difficult to become World Champion though.´
