Talmacsi recovering well following wrist operation

A crash on Friday morning in a rain-swept opening free practice run at the Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix, in which Gabor Talmacsi suffered scaphoid fractures in his left wrist, meant the Hungarian hardman had to ride through the pain for the rest of the weekend.

To his credit the 125cc World title holder got on with the job at Indianapolis Motor Speedway without complaint, qualifying sixteenth and finishing the curtailed single cylinder race fourteenth to pick up two points – losing ground on championship rivals Mike di Meglio and Simone Corsi, who ended up tenth and seventh respectively.

The Bancaja Aspar man was only able to participate in the race following intensive treatment and painkilling injections at Clinica Mobile during the course of a tricky Grand Prix weekend - and after tests at the Indiana Orthopedic Hospital on Monday morning Talmacsi went under the knife of local specialist Dr Tim Dicke.

The injury was an uncomplicated break and fortunately no further damage had been done to a fracture Talmacsi suffered on the same bone in 2003. Dr Dicke carried out a 50-minute operation with Talmacsi under general anaesthetic, placing a metal screw on the bone to hold the two broken parts together.

The rider from Budapest will have to wear a semi-rigid splint around his wrist for up to a week, with swimming and specific gym exercises to be undertaken to rehabilitate the joint.

Talmacsi is already said to be recovering well and is determined to rehabilitate himself correctly in order to be fit for next round of the World Championship, the A-Style Grand Prix of Japan on the 26th-28th weekend.
