Aspar pair dominate for third day at Jerez test

Aspar pair dominate for third day at Jerez test

As the first 250cc and 125cc test of the 2009 pre-season concluded it was Alvaro Bautista and Julian Simon respectively at the top of the timesheets once again.

Mapfre Aspar ride Alvaro Bautista rounded off this week´s visit to the southern Spanish circuit of Jerez in style on Wednesday afternoon, topping the timesheet again for the third and final day.

Indeed, having also dominated proceedings on Monday and Tuesday, as a number of 250cc and 125cc riders blew away the winter cobwebs at the first test of the year, Bautista again set a blistering pace on Wednesday – his best lap of 1.43'488 shaving 0.058 off absentee and World Champion Marco Simoncelli´s 250cc lap record.

Behind Bautista in the top five on the timesheet were the Spaniard´s new teammate and 125cc title holder Mike Di Meglio, Team Scot Honda´s new recruit Hiroshi Aoyama, former 125cc champion Gabor Talmacsi (Balaton Racing) and Emmi-Caffe Latte´s Thomas Luthi.

Another new colleague of Bautista in the Aspar structure - returning to 125cc riding this year - Julian Simon headed the 125cc timesheet for a third consecutive day.

The Spanish rider looked assured and in form on his new Aprilia machinery, lapping with a best time that was seven tenths quicker than second fastest participant Bradley Smith - the young Englishman who has also joined the Aspar 125cc team this winter.

Simon and Smith were joined by Sandro Cortese, Marc Marquez and Sergio Gadea in the 125cc top five.

The likes of Gadea, Luthi and Marquez were amongst a group of several riders who crashed, in spite of the favourable conditions in Andalusia, though none of them required hospital treatment.

The second 250cc and 125cc test of the 2009 pre-season takes place this weekend in Valencia, commencing on Saturday (31st January).
