New Mapfre Aspar colleagues reflect on successful Jerez visit

New Mapfre Aspar colleagues reflect on successful Jerez visit

Alvaro Bautista and his new teammate Mike di Meglio were both understandably satisfied at the end of this week´s preseason test in southern Spain.

Having dominated this week´s three day test at the Andalusian circuit of Jerez last year´s 250cc World Championship runner-up Alvaro Bautista was in fine spirits as he reviewed the first on-track workout of the year and looked ahead to continuing the good work in Valencia this weekend.

The Spaniard is expected to push reigning 250cc World Champion Marco Simoncelli hard for the title in 2009 and in the Italian´s absence at Jerez Bautista stated his intentions by heading the timesheet on each day.

Indeed, in pleasant conditions but with relatively cool temperatures Bautista went 0.058s under Simoncelli´s 250cc Jerez circuit record with a best effort of 1.43´488 on the last day, before stating, `I really didn´t expect to go this fast in these temperatures, but we did a great job.´

`On Tuesday I was pleased to be riding at 1´43 pace and then on Wednesday we just tried a few small things to try and keep things improving. We made some temporary tweaks just trying things out and the most important thing is that I was able to keep the good feeling going on the bike, like on the previous days. I´m also pleased to have had such a good rhythm here at Jerez, lapping constantly under 1´44 pace and beating the lap record.´

`These three days were just for getting back into things after three months without riding. We managed to do that and more on top, because we found some solutions which should be able to help us in various situations during the season,´ added the former 125cc World Champion. `I hope things will be just as good at Valencia this weekend.´

Meanwhile, Bautista´s new teammate and current 125cc title-holder Mike di Meglio was likewise pleased with how things had gone, having continued his adaptation to 250cc riding with the second quickest time of the day as the test drew to a conclusion.

`I´m very pleased at how well I was able to ride here. On the last morning I was riding just as fast as the previous day on only my sixth lap which was a good sign. I felt great with the bike and we are making improvements really quickly. Although I am happy at the results I am also disappointed that I couldn´t get my times down a bit lower at the end, but the temperatures were dropping too low. I think with slightly warmer track temperatures I would have kept up that fast pace. Now we look ahead to Valencia to continue the hard work.´
