Simon and Smith pleased with first 2009 outing

Bancaja Aspar´s new 125cc signings Julian Simon and Bradley Smith summarised the three days of progress they made in Jerez during this week´s test for the smaller classes.

Having moved down from 250cc competition to return to the single cylinder category over the winter, Julian Simon is already looking good on his new Aprilia 125cc machine having set the pace in this week´s test at Jerez.

The former Honda and KTM rider joins the Bancaja Aspar team to fight for the 125cc title in 2009 and he has started the year in the perfect fashion by topping the timesheets for three days consecutively in the first preseason outing, as several teams reconvened after the winter break in southern Spain.

Simon looked back on the work undertaken, stating, `On the last day we played around with the carburettor, making adjustments so that we could go right at the maximum at the end of the day. I wasn´t being held back really but I just felt we were lacking a bit of power earlier on. We also tried some tyres and some engine solutions and the times went well.´

He continued, `I did a lot of laps and at the end I felt I had the bike set up really well. I think I could have done even better though as I made a mistake on my fastest lap. Anyway I´m really pleased with the result and I want to thank all the mechanics and Aprilia for the great job they are doing.´

Simon´s new team-mate Bradley Smith was also in good form, finishing second on the final timesheet, before stating, `I´ve got to say that I´m very happy because I improved my best Tuesday time by more than a second. We got stuck in a rut on the second day and it took a while to make any further progress but in the end we made a step forward and I´m quite satisfied. We rode consistently well on all the different tyres we tried which is a good sign.´

`I tried a few different suspension settings and we got some good results from the bike, so it looks like we have got a good direction to go in as we keep working. Obviously the job doesn´t finish here and we need to keep improving but we have had a good test here. It´s nice to be back on a bike and we hope for good weather in Valencia in order to keep the work going.´
