Bautista to undergo surgery on collarbone fracture

Crash at Valencia test leaves 250cc rider requiring operation on Monday.

It was an undesirable end to what had been a promising week. 250cc star Alvaro Bautista found out firsthand on Sunday afternoon that the Valencia circuit was not apt for fast testing in the wet, and the resulting crash left the Spaniard with a collarbone fracture that required surgery on Monday.

Top of the timesheets in Jerez and on day one in Valencia, Bautista fell on the final lap of the Sunday session when light rainfall returned to the circuit. He was taken straight to the medical facility for examination by Dr Claudio Costa, before being moved to Madrid where the extent of the injury was confirmed.

`I wasn´t expecting the crash at all, because I was riding well and confidently,´ lamented the Mapfre Aspar rider.

`However, anything is possible with such a cold track. We´d just put on a new rear tyre –which was also cold. In any case, we hope that the consequences aren´t too serious, and that I can recover quickly.´

Following the operation, undertaken by Dr Angel Villamor, Bautista will remain in hospital until Tuesday afternoon.
