Talmacsi tops testing timesheet as rain and Bautista fall

Hungarian goes fastest in brief dry run at Valencia circuit in Spain.

Just over three months after his first 250cc test for the 2009 season, Gabor Talmacsi made his return to the Valencia circuit with the fastest time of the two-day stint in the Spanish city. The Hungarian took the initiative on Sunday afternoon on a dry track -a welcome respite to the wet conditions seen on Saturday- to record a 1´38.089 lap onboard his factory Aprilia RSA bike.

Talmacsi was just over a tenth of a second quicker than his closest rival, 2008 World Championship runner-up Alvaro Bautista. The top man in Jerez earlier in the week, Bautista only put in a small amount of laps on the final day of testing, and came unstuck when the rain returned at around 2pm local time. The Spaniard took a light tumble on the wet track that was enough to convince both he and the rest of the riders to bring the day to an early conclusion.

Mike di Meglio, Alex Baldolini, Ratthapark Wilairot, Hector Faubel and Raffaele de Rosa completed the 250cc field at the test, the latter riding at the track for the first time in Valencia with his quarter-litre Honda after sitting out the Saturday action. Team Scot counterpart Hiroshi Aoyama elected against riding in the cold and wet, content with data collected at the previous visit to Jerez.

Julian Simon continued at the head of the 125cc timesheet with his lower cylinder category version of the Aspar RSA, once again lending credence to his case as a potential title challenger for 2009. Teammate Sergio Gadea was just over a tenth of a second slower than his new teammate´s 1´41.839 lap in his brief time on track, whilst Bradley Smith completed an all-Aspar top three a further three-tenths down.

Scott Redding and Marc Marquez were the also within a second of Simon´s lap.

Most of the participants in the weekend test will next ride at Estoril in Portugal, before the Official Test in Jerez. Other teams will head to Almeria, Spain to continue their own preparations for the 2009 season.
