Cortese eyes Estoril excursion for further development

Cortese eyes Estoril excursion for further development

German rider’s preseason preparation to continue in Portugal next month.

Adverse conditions in Valencia for testing this past weekend made the lower cylinder category visit to the Spanish circuit an effective write-off, setting back the rider’s adaptation to their 2009 bikes. One of the riders taking the least away from the test was Sandro Cortese, unable to put in significant track time over the course of the two days.

The German rider will next test in six weeks time at the Estoril circuit in Portugal, as part of a reduced schedule for the Ajo Motorsport team.

“We stayed in the garage on Saturday (in Valencia) and on Sunday we had just found our rhythm when it started to rain,” explained Cortese. “We didn’t get to try so much, but we had three dry –if a little windy- days in Jerez to work on the bike.

“The next test is a long time away, and it is hard to stay fit, but with three days in Estoril and then the Official MotoGP Test in Jerez we should be ready for the start of the season.”

As the season draws closer, Cortese may not be able to afford the luxury of waiting on sunshine, although the 19 year-old is not too preoccupied about riding in the wet.

“If it rains in Estoril then I think that I will have to go out and do some laps, because we are going to need some wet practice,” he continued. “But for sure it won’t rain in Qatar –or at least I hope not!”

A large section of the 125cc and 250cc grids are expected to participate in the Estoril test, including the title favourite Aspar riders.
