Simoncelli makes return at top of Valencia timesheet

First test of 2009 for 250cc World Champion as action opens in Valencia.

Beginning his preparations for 2009 onboard the latest edition of the Metis Gilera RSA, Marco Simoncelli hit the ground running with the fastest time of the first day of testing in Valencia on Thursday. The 250cc World Champion recorded a quickest time of 1’37.2 from 73 laps.

Aside from a run-off during the testing session, Simoncelli had a wholly positive day at the Spanish track, with track conditions contrasting with the wet weather that cut short the previous test at the circuit.

One of the riders to see his work affected by the early February downpour, Hector Faubel also reaped the benefits of dry asphalt with the Thai Honda 250cc machine. He was less than half a second down on Simoncelli´s lap. Alex Baldolini, Roberto Locatelli, Ratthapark Wilairot and Karel Abraham –who performed the most laps of the sextet- are also riding at the two-day test.

Efren Vazquez was the speediest of the 125cc competitors present, with a 1’42.1 lap, although he fell during the session in a spectacular crash. The Derbi rider had a new teammate –Joan Olive- announced as part of the Bainet backed squad, joining Pol Espargaro in a three-pronged outfit.

125cc rookie Lorenzo Savadori was second fastest, a second down on Vazquez’ time, whilst Espargaro was a further second slower in third after suffering technical problems.
