Simoncelli in control during final Valencia test session

Simoncelli in control during final Valencia test session

The 250cc World Champion Marco Simoncelli was the top man on track on both days of his first 2009 test appearance.

Friday saw Marco Simoncelli end the second and final day at the top of the 250cc timesheet, the Italian having also been fastest on day one at the Valencia test. The Metis Gilera man went round in a best time of 1’36.4, two tenths quicker than his team-mate Roberto Locatelli.

Simoncelli was one second off his own pole position record which he set at the Spanish circuit during last year’s season-concluding Grand Prix.

Of the 125cc riders present it was Lorenzo Savadori (Aprilia) who set the pace, three tenths of a second ahead of Pol Espargaró. The day saw a nasty incident in which Efrén Vázquez became entangled in his Derbi machinery following a crash and was taken to hospital having injured his right leg.

Derbi’s Espargaró and Maxtra rider Mathew Hoyle both also had crashes but neither rider was hurt.

Some of the 125cc field will be back in Valencia testing again in the week commencing 16th February, with the likes of Nico Terol and Simone Corsi scheduled to make their 2009 test debuts.
