Barberá reviews return to riding at Barcelona

Making a comeback on competition machinery following his serious accident in Japan last year, Hector Barberá has undertaken his first laps with the Sito Pons managed Pepe World Team.

Héctor Barberá was back on track on Thursday for the first time since his horror crash at Motegi in September last year in which he fractured three vertebrae, cutting short his 2008 season.

The rider from Valencia missed the last four races of the year due to the back injury and has been working hard on his fitness over the winter having signed with new 250cc outfit Pepe World Team, where he will ride alongside debutant Axel Pons, son of team boss Sito Pons.

“The five months away have seemed like an eternity so I have been really looking forward to this,” Barberá said after the first of two test days at Montmeló on Thursday. “I felt pretty comfortable on the bike straight away and even though it is the same model as the one I crashed on I just wanted to get back to riding it again. The first few laps I had an amazing feeling. I had almost forgotten what a 250cc bike felt like and that was really motivating.”

“I’m happy with the lap times. It was a bit slow at first as the track was slippery but things got better as the day went on,” he added after completing 57 laps with a best time of 1’48.6. “In the end I was 1.5 seconds off my best time here, back I’m not too bothered about that. The most important thing was to get the feeling back and it was good. It doesn´t feel like I have been away for five months now.”
