Luthi hoping winter fitness work will pay dividends

Emmi-Caffe Latte’s Thomas Luthi will be aiming high in his third 250cc campaign and the Swiss former 125cc World Champion has been working extra hard on his fitness over the winter break.

Joining a number of his 2009 250cc rivals at the preseason test in Portugal on Sunday, Thomas Luthi arrived at the Estoril practice meeting in excellent shape having worked diligently over the winter months.

Last season brought mixed fortunes for the likeable Swiss rider as he achieved his first 250cc podiums, following a number of near misses, before a big crash at Indianapolis saw him injure his left hand and miss three races. He will be aiming much higher than his eleventh placed 2008 final standings finish this season.

On day one at Estoril on Sunday Luthi lapped eighth fastest of the twelve 250cc riders in attendance, his best time coming on the penultimate lap of a marathon 85-turn workout.

Talking to about his preseason preparations he explained, “My biggest goal during the break was to completely recover from last year’s injuries, so there was a lot of physiotherapy involved. I went to Socal for some motocross for around a month and Alex Hofmann joined me there for a couple of weeks. Last week I got back to Europe from a kite-boarding trip to Egypt with my team boss Daniel Epp.

He continued, “I have had a pretty intensive time with training this winter. I worked with my personal coach Otmar Keller. He also used to coach the Swiss national soccer team and was working with Americas Cup-winning team Alinghi, for several years. We did a lot of cross country skiing and snowshoeing and we went climbing. We even climbed up a frozen waterfall and I have to say I’m really fit now.”

On his remaining preseason plans, Luthi added, “After Estoril I have another week of training with Otmar and then I’m off to the tests in Jerez and Qatar. In between all that I have a few media and sponsorship appointments. With my bike we will be in a competitive position and the goal is to be with the leading group this year.”
