Early testing form sets Smith up for success

Briton working on new setup in opening tests of 2009.

Repeating his 2008 testing form in the run-up to the 2009 season, Bradley Smith is once again establishing himself as a potential title favourite with his latest visit to Spanish soil. The Briton undertook four days of testing in Jerez and Valencia (skipping the opening session of the latter) last week, consistently rivaling new Aspar teammate Julian Simon at the top of the timesheets.

A brief outing over the weekend at the Ricardo Tormo circuit allowed Smith to further work on a new setting for his Aprilia RSA and, despite limited time on track, the Briton was happy with the findings.

`It was nice to get some laps in, although most of our work for the week was done in the three days at Jerez; here we just confirmed what we´d taken from there,´ he said after rain brought the Valencia visit to an early conclusion.

`We´ve started work on a setup that is completely new to what I had last year. We´d begun using it at the first tests at the end of last year, and it seems safer and with more room to adjust to variables.´

Whilst the weather at these first evaluation runs have not been the most adequate for Smith, the calendar for 2009 is certainly favourable for the teenager. Favoured tracks Qatar, Motegi and Jerez begin the year, giving him perhaps his best chance of getting ahead in the title chase early on.

`Last time out at Qatar everything was good until raceday,´ he commented on the mechanical problems that followed his dominance of practice and qualifying in Losail. `Japan is also a place where I have always gone well. We´ll be starting all guns blazing, but then again so will everybody else!´

Smith´s next test is likely to come at the Portuguese circuit of Estoril next month.
