Iannone ends 125cc Estoril test as Tuesday’s fastest

WWC rider Andrea Iannone was the fastest 125cc participant in Tuesday’s third and final day of Estoril preseason testing.

Italian 19 year-old Andrea Iannone gave himself and new team WWC a confidence boost on Tuesday as he rounded off the test visit to Portugal for the smaller classes as the quickest 125cc attendee on the final day.

Strong wind at Estoril, which lies close to the Atlantic Coast and is often exposed to the elements, prevented the riders from matching Monday’s times and Iannone’s best effort of 1’45.969 made him Tuesday’s number one. Iannone was the surprise winner of last year’s Grand Prix in China in wet conditions and he will take heart from today’s result ahead of his fifth full World Championship campaign.

Behind Aprilia-equipped Iannone on the Tuesday timesheets were two Derbi riders, Ajo Interwetten’s Sandro Cortese in second place and Bainet Derbi’s Pol Espargaró in third, though neither got within half a second of Iannone’s best.

Behind Espargaró, Esteve Rabat (Blusens Aprilia) and Joan Olivé (Derbi) ensured there was a strong Spanish presence in the top five.

Scott Redding, Randy Krummenacher, Takaaki Nakagami, Efrén Vázquez and Jonas Folger completed the top ten.

With the Bancaja Aspar team not testing on Tuesday the likes of Julian Simón and Bradley Smith were absent from the timesheets, but Simón’s Monday best effort of 1’45.046s made him the fastest 125cc rider of the three day Portuguese test.

The riders will reconvene next week at Jerez for three days of work (25th-27th March) at the Official MotoGP Test.
