Fastest day one pair ready for more action

The two quickest riders on day one of the 250cc and 125cc Official Test at Jerez, Héctor Barberá and Julián Simón, are expecting another busy day on Thursday.

Two Spaniards riding with new teams this season topped the smaller class timesheets on Spanish soil at the Andalusian circuit of Jerez on Wednesday.

Although 250cc rider Héctor Barberá was the quickest in the cool temperatures which greeted the test participants in southern Spain, the 22 year-old believes there is plenty of room for improvement as the test continues on Thursday and Friday.

Barberá, who has joined Sito Pons’ newly formed 250cc Pepeworld Team as he makes a comeback from a serious back injury sustained last year, completed 67 laps on Wednesday and achieved a best time of 1’43.156s.

He stated, “There was a lot of wind throughout the day which normally makes things tough, but I was still able to ride well, so I’m fairly happy. I am still ironing out a few problems and hopefully the weather will be better on Thursday. Early on Wednesday we worked with a new rear suspension but because of the conditions we couldn’t make any real conclusions. The key thing with these tests is that I keep re-building my confidence, get fully acquainted with the team and continue working hard.”

In the 125cc class, meanwhile, Barberá’s compatriot Julián Simón put in 46 laps and came out on top with a best effort of 1’47.345s.

Returning to single cylinder riding this year, having been signed up by the highly competitive Bancaja Aspar team, Simón noted, “We got good results on Wednesday in spite of the wind. With a 125cc bike the blustery conditions make it harder to control because the machine is smaller. I worked on setting up the bike throughout the day so that we have things sorted for the first race in Qatar. Although we made progress during the day I think the times are definitely beatable over the rest of the test.”

He continued, “On Thursday we need to keep looking for more so that we are in the best possible shape for the start of the championship. Over the whole of the preseason so far the team have been superb and I really want to thank them already, because they are doing a great job of helping me get used to riding in 125cc again.”
