Iannone starts Japanese quest as fastest 125cc rider

Italian rider puts in 2’00.685 lap of Twin Ring Motegi.

The current series leader in the 125cc class, Andrea Iannone put the heat on his lower cylinder category rivals on a cool Friday at Motegi. Ongetta Team I.S.P.A’s Italian rider opened up the free practice sessions for the Polini Grand Prix of Japan with the quickest time of the solitary 125cc run, a 2’00.685 lap.

Qatar poleman Julián Simón was second fastest, less than two-tenths of a second slower than the man with whom he had the briefest of battles at the Losail race. 2008 racewinner Stefan Bradl came in third quickest, running off track on one of his final hot laps.

Esteve Rabat and Nico Terol upped the Spanish representation in the top five, whilst completing the list of the fastest ten on Friday were Dominique Aegerter, Bradley Smith, Pol Espargaro, Sandro Cortese and Marc Marquez.

Regular riders lowsiding in the afternoon session were two first-timers in Japan: Red Bull KTM’s Cameron Beaubier and Italian newcomer Lorenzo Savadori.
