Former Formula 1 great Warwick in awe of MotoGP action

Former Formula 1 great Warwick in awe of MotoGP action

Briton makes Rossi, Pedrosa, Stoner Fantasy League picks for Le Mans.

Dubbed ‘the greatest driver never to win a Formula 1 race’, Derek Warwick certainly knows his motorsport. The star of the eighties/early nineties has discovered a new passion in the world of racing in recent years, like many in Britain becoming hooked on MotoGP.

The former driver is present at Le Mans this weekend to watch his first live race, and even after watching qualifying in the flesh he was endlessly impressed.

“It’s just fantastic to watch here. I’ve been a massive MotoGP fan ever since I started watching a few years ago, but to see it in person has just blown me away. I’ve never seen anything like it,” exclaimed Warwick. “The lean angles that these guys get, the commitment, it’s really amazing. People talk about the last guy on the grid being somebody who perhaps isn’t very good, but he’s on the absolute limit and totally committed. Any rider here is fantastic.

His personal history at Le Mans is limited to four-wheel action, with wins to his name at the French track. Warwick is also one of the leading figures at the Silverstone circuit which will hold the British Grand Prix from 2010 onwards.

“My own experiences of Le Mans have been very good, winning here with Peugot is a great memory. As far as my experiences with bikes goes, I don’t think that I’m classed as a biker by my friends, as I ride a Harley Davidson!” he joked.

And Warwick’s pick for the top three on Sunday? Without wishing to bite the hand that feeds him, the Briton went for the reigning World Champion and current series leader as his predicted victor.

“Ducati have been treating me extremely well with wonderful hospitality here, so it’s difficult for me to say this, but I’m a massive Rossi fan! Everything he’s done, his riding, is just amazing to me. My pick? Rossi, Pedrosa, Stoner.”
