Simoncelli hoping to re-emerge in title fight

Italian rider’s Assen podium gives him hope for championship comeback.

Marco Simoncelli’s rollercoaster title defence season was definitely on the up at the Alice TT Assen, where he finished on the podium having been confirmed as a San Carlo Honda Gresini rider in MotoGP for 2010.

Although he was apparently held back by tyre problems the rider from Cattolica, near Misano, crossed the line in third place in The Netherlands, re-igniting his campaign as he seeks to force his way back into the title race from some distance behind the frontrunners.

The dramatic late crash for Álvaro Bautista meant Simoncelli gained 16 points on his Spanish rival, but the 250cc World Champion is 44 points behind current standings leader Hiroshi Aoyama.

“I am fairly happy with the podium result and I think that without the rear end problems I experienced during the race things could have been different,” commented Simoncelli. “From the midway point I could hardly ride properly because the rear tyre had a fault and was destroyed really quickly.”

The Metis Gilera rider continued, “Anyway, I’ve made up some points on Bautista and some of my other rivals so I’m quite satisfied and I just have to try and remain consistent now.”
