Cecchinello describes surprise podium delight

The manager and owner of the satellite LCR Honda team Lucio Cecchinello spoke to after Randy de Puniet’s remarkable rostrum run on Sunday at Donington.

The British Grand Prix was full of surprises and few would have predicted a podium featuring maiden victor Andrea Dovizioso, veteran Yamaha rider Colin Edwards and the vastly improved Randy de Puniet.

LCR Honda readily admit that their technical package is much better this year than it was in 2008, but the big step forward taken by the team has been in the consistency of De Puniet’s riding which was lacking in an error-strewn 2008 campaign.

Indeed the Frenchman’s only DNF of this year so far had come at Sachsenring, the weekend before Donington, and De Puniet immediately bounced back with a controlled and professional performance to deliver an unexpected podium much to the approval of his boss Lucio Cecchinello.

The Italian team owner stated, “It is very special for us because we haven’t ‘jumped’ onto the podium since the Turkish Grand Prix in 2006 and in particular this was a really tough race because of the conditions. Everyone in the pitbox was shaking and nervous as the conditions were so hard, so many riders crashed, but finally we had good luck and Randy did an excellent job.”

Explaining what such a finish means to his team, Cecchinello added, “I believe that the results from this weekend are very, very important for the MotoGP World Championship. These kind of results make it possible for a satellite team to convince sponsors, convince our supporters and gain credibility in front of our public. Hopefully this will also help us get better technical material from our suppliers too.”
