Dovizioso hoping to bridge the gap

Dovizioso hoping to bridge the gap

Friday’s free practice at Brno illustrated Andrea Dovizioso’s view that he must improve his speed in the dry in order to repeat his maiden MotoGP win at Donington.

Having enjoyed the summer break after a sensational first ever premier class victory at the British Grand Prix it was back to normal for Repsol Honda’s Andrea Dovizioso on Friday at Brno as he continued his quest to match the top riders in MotoGP.

Dovizioso rode intelligently to claim his brilliant Donington win in wet-dry conditions but in the dry at the Cardion ab Czech Republic Grand Prix on Friday he was still just behind the leading riders in the premier class, in fifth place, with a 1.5s deficit to make up on paceman Jorge Lorenzo.

“Today there was too much of a gap between ourselves and the fastest riders,” the Italian told after FP1. “Valentino and especially Lorenzo are really, really fast, even better than the best lap from the race last year. They were a little bit too fast for us.”

He expanded, “We have some problems, in particular on the braking which for me is so difficult to manage. We are also having problems in the middle of the corner and on exiting so we need to find something. We also need to improve things with the gearbox, so there are lots of little changes we need to make for Saturday but we will try. We didn’t have time to try the new swingarm so we will try that tomorrow.”

On whether expectations would be raised for Sunday’s race by his Donington win Dovizioso replied, “No, it is not so different because the realistic situation is the same as before the victory. In the dry we are not as fast as the others, we are still working and we need to improve our speed.”
