Late effort pushes Simoncelli to the front

Marco Simoncelli wrapped up the Saturday morning Indianapolis practices at the top of the 250cc pile.

World Champion Marco Simoncelli set the pace in FP2 for the 250cc class at Indianapolis before lunchtime at The Brickyard and the Italian will try to take his good form into qualifying later in the day.

The Metis Gilera man’s late 1’45.001 lap was fractionally faster than his Indy 2008 pole position lap and was achieved on the last of his 24 turns of the famous American circuit.

Behind Simoncelli on the timesheet was Spaniard Héctor Barberá (Pepe World Team) by just a 0.048s margin, whilst Frenchman Mike di Meglio (Mapfre Aspar) was a further 0.162s back in third place – both of those riders also setting their best times on their 24th and final laps.

Thai rider Ratthapark Wilairot (Thai Honda PTT SAG) does not normally feature as high up as fourth in any session, so he will be pleased by his free practice performance which put him just ahead of title hopeful Álvaro Bautista (Mapfre Aspar Team).

Héctor Faubel (Valencia CF - Honda SAG), Hiroshi Aoyama (Scot Racing Team), Mattia Pasini (Team Toth Aprilia), Alex Debon (Aeropuerto-Castello-Blusens) and Roberto Locatelli (Metis Gilera) were also in the top ten.
