Nearly 20,000 fans enjoy CEV at Catalunya circuit

There was a party atmosphere over the weekend at the Catalunya circuit for the fifth round of the CEV Buckler 2009 (Spanish National Championship), with 19,200 spectators in attendance at the venue which is situated on the outskirts of Barcelona.

In the 125GP class the leader of the championship Alberto Moncayo took a big step towards his first national title with his third consecutive race win, overcoming Miguel Oliveira in the final stages. The young Portuguese rider Oliveira held the lead for much of the race, setting a pace below the pole position time and he looked well set for his first 125GP win.

But Moncayo had other ideas and set about chasing him down, getting right up behind his rival with three laps to go and eventually overtaking him on the final lap. Maverick Viñales was third and on this occasion he had no chance of fighting for the win. Moncayo enjoys a 24 point lead over Viñales now and he could take the title in his home race at Jerez next time out.

Kenny Noyes was the man in control in an exciting Fórmula Extreme/Moto2 race. The poleman Iván Silva made another bad start and had to make a comeback from tenth place to finish second, 1.3s behind Noyes. The podium was completed by Carmelo Morales who has a good chance of winning the championship at Jerez, with a 29 point lead over Bernat Martínez and a 33 point lead over Silva. The highest placed privateer was Manel Tirado, who finished eighth.

The five Moto2 riders in attendance – Arcas could not start after damaging his bike in qualifying – put on a great show, with Xavier Forés and Dani Rivas battling it out between them and eventually respectively finishing tenth and eleventh, separated by just fractions of a second.

In the Supersport class Jordi Torres took a great victory after an intense battle with Kev Coghlan and Iván Moreno. The three swapped positions at the front of the race on several occasions, but Coghlan got it wrong as he tried to overtake Moreno on the final straight and Torres took full advantage for his first win of the year. Jorge Castellanos was the best performing privateer in seventh place.

David Kyle Smith was unable to clinch the Kawasaki Ninja Cup crown with one more race to go, despite the retirement of Elena Rosell, who crashed on lap five. Smith then rode steadily to take as many points as possible in fourth place. Victory went to Jaume Ferrer, who shared the podium with Angel Molero and Ismael Bonilla.

The next round of CEV Buckler 2009 races take place on 15th November at the Jerez de la Frontera circuit.
