2009 season review: Jonas Folger

Tuesday, 15 December 2009

Talented young German rider is the 125cc Rookie of the Year after an exciting season in the World Championship.

Jonas Folger experienced his full debut season in the 125cc World Championship in 2009, and the 16 year-old finished it as the Rookie of the Year after a series of impressive rides placed him 12th in the final standings.

The German spent three years developing his talent in the MotoGP Academy and made a handful of wildcard appearances in the latter half of the 2008 season, even registering a point-scoring finish at Misano when he had just turned 15.

This year Folger made his full debut with Ongetta Team I.S.P.A. and got off to a fantastic start with sixth place in Qatar and eighth in Japan. In the third race at Jerez where he started from last place on the grid due to technical problems in free practice, Folger was battling for a podium finish when he crashed out on the penultimate lap.

That first podium came in the next race at Le Mans, where Folger rose from 16th on the grid to finish second on a wet track, and qualification on the front row of the grid at Catalunya followed shortly after.

The second half of the season provide more difficult for Folger as he experienced more crashes, including the final two races of the campaign in Malaysia and Valencia, but in 2010 he will continue with Ongetta.

Next year, Folger will ride an Aprilia RSA and he has stated his aim to finish inside the top five, a target that does not seem beyond him after his displays in 2009.
