Debón completes Spanish pole position clean sweep
Experienced 250cc competitor Álex Debón was the third Spaniard to secure a pole position start at Jerez on Saturday.
An interesting 250cc qualifying practice at the Gran Premio bwin.com de España concluded the Saturday action at Jerez, with Álex Debón (Aeroport Castello-Blusens) making it three Spaniards on pole in the three World Championship categories.
The former Aprilia test rider Debón, who assisted MotoGP pole man and championship leader Lorenzo during the Majorcan’s 250cc years, made sure he too was the top man in his class, much to the continued delight of the Spanish crowd.
The fans in Andalucia had further reason to cheer, as Héctor Barberá (Pepe World Team Aprilia) qualified in second place, edging out the third fastest rider - Metis Gilera’s World Champion Marco Simoncelli - who suffered the second of two Saturday crashes in the session.
Mapfre Aspar’s Álvaro Bautista was the third Spanish 250cc rider notching himself a front row start, whilst the second row will feature Jules Cluzel (Matteoni Racing), Hiroshi Aoyama (Scot Racing Team), Mike di Meglio (Mapfre Aspar Team) and Thomas Luthi (Emmi – Caffe Latte).
