As the 250cc action got underway at the Gran Premio d’Italia Alice Álvaro Bautista led the way on Friday.

World Championship leader Álvaro Bautista (Mapfre Aspar) set out his stall as the Friday action concluded at Mugello, the Spanish rider wrapping up 250cc FP1 a 0.244s margin ahead of closest rival Hiroshi Aoyama (Scot Racing), who incidentally also sits second in the general standings.

Bautista’s best time of 1’53.814 on the last of his 26 laps will give him confidence overnight as he seeks to extend his lead at the top of the standings this weekend - at the home track of fellow title candidate and reigning 250cc World Champion Marco Simoncelli.

Indeed, an off-colour Simoncelli was down in eighth in this session, more than a second behind Bautista.

There was plenty of Spanish representation at the head of the timesheet as Héctor Barberá (Pepe World Team) and Alex Debon (Aeropuerto-Castello-Blusens) lapped third and fourth fastest respectively.

Raffaele de Rosa (Scot Racing), Karel Abraham (Cardion AB Motoracing), Ratthapark Wilairot (Thai Honda PTT SAG), Mattia Pasini (Team Toth Aprilia) and Héctor Faubel (Valencia CF - Honda SAG) also featured in the top ten.
