After a slow start on Friday World Champion Marco Simoncelli set the 250cc pace on Saturday morning at Mugello.

Metis Gilera’s 250cc World title holder Marco Simoncelli warmed up for Saturday afternoon qualifying at his home race with a superb 1’52.589 free practice 2 lap which left his rivals trailing.

The Italian rider registered his best time, which was faster than Héctor Barberá’s pole record for Mugello set last year, towards the end of the morning outing to put himself clear at the top of the timing screen by a considerable 0.628s margin.

Indeed it was Pepe World Team’s Barberá who got closest to Simoncelli with his own late charge of 1’53.217 to finish second in the session.

Karel Abraham (Cardion AB Motoracing) was third fastest, less than a second behind Simoncelli, whilst championship front runners Álvaro Bautista (Mapfre Aspar Team) and Hiroshi Aoyama (Scot Racing Team) were fifth and fourth quickest respectively.

Alex Debon (Aeropuerto-Castello-Blusens), Ratthapark Wilairot (Thai Honda PTT SAG), Mike di Meglio (Mapfre Aspar), Roberto Locatelli (Metis Gilera) and Lukas Pesek (Auto Kelly – CP) completed the top ten.
