Vázquez undergoes successful arm operation

Spanish Derbi rider Efrén Vázquez has had surgery to alleviate ‘compartmental syndrome’ in his left arm.

Derbi Racing rider Efrén Vázquez underwent surgery this week at the San José USP Hospital in Madrid to help him overcome the ‘arm pump’ symptoms caused by compartmental syndrome which he has been experiencing in his left arm.

Last weekend at the Alice TT Assen Vázquez experienced problems, with the pain becoming so severe that at one stage he felt he may be unable to complete the 125cc race, which he eventually did finish in 12th place.

On returning to Madrid from The Netherlands Vázquez visited Dr. Ángel Villamor, who diagnosed compartmental syndrome and recommended surgery, which took place late on Wednesday. The operation to treat the ailment that often affects Grand Prix riders involves loosening the membrane around the muscles in the forearm.

Vázquez has already had this type of surgery on his right side, around a year ago, with doctors also therefore checking the condition of his right arm during the operation.

The Spaniard is expected to be back in action in Germany in two weeks time at Sachsenring, when the 125cc competition recommences after a two weekend break.
