Pons Kalex unveil Moto2 prototype
Pons Kalex unveiled their Moto2 prototype at Valencia on Friday, ahead of their participation in the inaugural 2010 season.
Following the announcement of their joint venture in October, Pons Racing and Kalex Engineering – who will race as Pons Kalex in the Moto2 category next year – have unveiled their prototype at the Gran Premio Generali de la Comunitat Valenciana.
The Spanish racing team and German engineering company have developed a new machine, which they will test at the Ricardo Tormo Circuit following this weekend’s Grand Prix, and Pons Racing Team Manager, Sito Pons, spoke to motogp.com as their machine was put on display.
“We are very proud to unveil our prototype for next year. We have a joint venture with Kalex Engineering and they have a lot of experience in technology; they work in Formula 1, DTM and aeronautics,” explained Pons. “With Kalex we can develop our own technology with them, and create our own prototype. This is the key factor that helped make our decision to join up with them. It’s not like we have a bike already finished, we are going to build this machine and develop it with them. We can build on this and in the future go to MotoGP and other things – this will be a good base for us to develop our own technology.”
Pons continued, “We will make our first rollout on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. This is our first prototype and we need to evolve it. We are sure this is already very close to the finished article, we think this is the way we should go.”
The identity of the riders for the Pons Kalex team next season is still a closely-guarded secret however.
“For the moment we cannot announce who will ride this machine,” said Pons. “Obviously we have been working for a long time on that, we have some good ideas and I think in the near future we can announce the riders who will be in our project.”
