New World Champion Simón thanks Aspar team
A humble Julián Simón was quick to thank his Bancaja Aspar team after he clinched the 125cc World title at the Iveco Australian Grand Prix.
Bancaja Aspar’s newly crowned World Champion Julián Simón thanked the highly successful Spanish team after he wrapped up the title with an exciting last lap victory over his team-mate Bradley Smith in Australia on Sunday.
Having spent four years previously in the 125cc class and then two years in the 250cc category, Simón returned to the single cylinder class under the management of Jorge Martínez ‘Aspar’ for the 2009 season and the decision has paid huge dividends for both parties.
Prior to the start of this season Simón had never started from pole and had won only one Grand Prix, in the wet at Donington Park in 2005, but he soon changed that after a good preseason and a strong start to the year. Six poles, five race wins and five further podiums are stats that speak for themselves and the Spaniard now celebrates his first World title with two rounds to spare.
After securing the 125cc crown with an excellent performance at Phillip Island he stated, “I’m really, really happy. The race was very complicated and it went down to the last lap as Smith was pushing really hard to win. I went for it at the end and I was able to win. Now the most important thing to do is thank my team, my sponsors and everybody around me, because they have provided great support.”
“This time last year at this circuit (Phillip Island) I signed the contract to come back to the 125cc class and now I have won the championship here. The congratulations really go to the team though, because they have been so strong at every race.”
