Hernández finds space amongst the fastest

New to the World Championship stage, the Blusens STX rider has already been placing amongst the top times in pre-season Moto2 testing.

He may have entered as a newcomer to the World Championship stage but after the private test at Catalunya and the two official pre-season tests at Valencia and Jerez, Yonny Hernández has put his name forward as a strong Moto2 candidate. The Blusens STX team rider surprised many with his performances at the tests, and has now become one of the talked about riders in the new intermediate category.

Hernández finished the Valencia test with the ninth fastest official time, less than a second behind quickest rider Julián Simón, and after the three days the Colombian was very pleased with his display.

“To be in the top ten in the first official test is very positive, given the few rides I’ve had on this bike,” he said. “We had some problems with chatter and rear traction, but we solved them and I feel more comfortable every time.”

Just 72 hours later Hernández was back on the bike at Jerez, where he was also quick to register good times.

“These have not been perfect days,” said the 21 year-old, who finished the Jerez test with the second fastest time overall. “The first day we did not go out on the track because the team did not want to risk it, but in the end we decided to ride. This was because I need experience in the wet with the Moto2 bike, given that I fell twice in these conditions at Montmeló when I rode in them for the first time. This is in contrast to the dry track conditions on which we did very well, even though we had some problems with chatter on the front.”

The talented Hernández is eager to get back on track at Jerez for the final pre-season test, scheduled for March 27-29, and make the most of the available track time. He remains reserved about his title chances, but has clear ideas about the forthcoming season.

“This year we can do well,” he said. “That’s not to say we can win or be ahead, because now is not the moment to say this, but it is my first year and I think to be in the top ten times is something positive.”
