Wilairot eager for debut Bimota HB4 ride at Jerez

Wilairot eager for debut Bimota HB4 ride at Jerez

The Thai rider will have his first experience on board the Moto2 machine of the Thai Honda PTT SAG team at the final pre-season Test at Jerez this weekend.

The Thai Honda PTT SAG team’s final preparations for the 2010 season will take place over the weekend, with the final official pre-season Test at Jerez scheduled to run from Saturday until Monday. It will be the first time that rider Ratthapark Wilairot will be on board his new machine, and will provide the 21 year-old with the chance to meet again with his former 250cc competitors and new Moto2 rivals.

The Thai rider has been able to maintain a distance from the ups and downs experienced by his team during the pre-season, with their initial plan to ride with a Suter prototype changing to the use of the Bimota chassis, and it is with this frame that Wilairot will contest his fourth season in the World Championship. Wilairot also only found out last week that he will be sharing the garage with Bernat Martínez, when the Spaniard’s signature was confirmed last Thursday.

“The wait has been a long one but finally I’m back in the World Championship,” explained Wilairot, who on Monday arrived in a town just outside Barcelona called Sant Fruitós de Bages, where he resides during the season. “I return to form part of the Stop and Go Racing set-up, a team which sees me as a rider born to be in the World Championship.”

A lack of track time with his official bike has not stopped Wilairot from being as prepared as possible. He trained with 600cc machines throughout the winter with his father and brother to maintain his feeling with 4-stroke bikes, which he has ridden before in his homeland.

“During the winter break I continued with my physical training, and had some technical preparation by riding at different Thai circuits with 600cc 4-stroke bikes. This training has been very helpful because the new Moto2 category is going to be very competitive,” observed Wilairot, who stressed the advantage his team will have by being the only one in the category using the chassis of Italian manufacturer Bimota.

“Only two riders will be using the Bimota prototype and I am one of them,” he said. “The exclusive use of this chassis in Moto2 will allow us close contact with the Italian company and will be a very important factor in the development of the bike.”
