Márquez blazes a trail to head up 125cc grid

The young Spaniard will start the opening race of the season in Qatar in pole position, the third of his career.

Marc Márquez replicated his superb pre-season form to set the fastest time in 125cc qualifying and secure pole position for the opening race of the 2010 season. The Red Bull Ajo Motorsport rider, who was the third quickest across both practice sessions, rode his Derbi machine round the Losail track in a best time of 2’06.651 to ensure his title bid will begin from the front of the grid on Sunday evening.

Pol Espargaró (Tuenti Racing), who was quickest in practice, Nico Terol (Bancaja Aspar) and Efrén Vázquez (Tuenti Racing) will join Márquez on the front row. Espargaró, who was the quickest rider of the two practice sessions, was just under half a second off the pace of Márquez in qualifying at 2’07.110.

The second row line-up will be comprised of Randy Krummenacher (Stipa-Molenaar Racing), Tomoyoshi Koyama (Racing Team Germany), Sandro Cortese (Avant Mitsubishi Ajo) and Alexis Masbou (Team Ongetta).

Ninth fastest was Bradley Smith (Bancaja Aspar), with Esteve Rabat (Blusens-STX) completing the top ten in the 40-minute session. Smith’s fellow Brit Danny Webb of the Andalucia Cajasol team will start from 13th position.

The 125cc Commercialbank Grand Prix of Qatar is scheduled to commence at 8pm local time on Sunday.
