Clever strategy pays off for Terol with first win of 2010

Clever strategy pays off for Terol with first win of 2010

The Spanish rider was in admirable form as he started his partnership with the Bancaja Aspar team with victory in the first race of the season in Qatar.

Nico Terol opened his bid for the 2010 125cc World Championship title with victory in Qatar at the weekend, taking first place in the Commercialbank Grand Prix of Qatar in his first race with his new Bancaja Aspar team.

The 21 year-old Spaniard’s third GP win of his career came after he took full advantage of his place on the front row of the starting grid, maintaining a pace with the leading pack in the early stages of the race before making a surge with just over a third of the race remaining to win with a perfectly judged tactical plan.

Striking the first blow over title rivals such as Efrén Vazquez, Marc Márquez and Pol Espargaró, all of whom he had trailed in practice, Terol stepped up a level in the race to use his five full previous seasons of World Championship experience to full effect.

"I knew as soon as the red light went out that there were going to be many riders fighting for the win. I really concentrated throughout the entire race and was trying to save my tyres as well,” said Terol.

“I took the pressure off myself, aiming to be in the front group and not take any risks early on. The objective was to make a strong push with seven or eight laps to go, in order to complete the final third of the race with as few rivals as possible around me. When some riders got caught up with one another I made my move, and it proved to be decisive to my victory.”

Terol maintained a level-headed focus as he concluded: “I am very grateful to my team, because they did a tremendous job over the weekend. Starting the season with a win is a glorious feeling, but we have to keep our feet on the ground as the season has only just begun."
