Doohan considered MotoGP return

In an interview with The Sydney Morning Herald, Mick Doohan has revealed that he was very close to coming out of retirement and returning to the MotoGP World Championship. The five-time 500cc World Champion, who retired after an accident at the Spanish GP at Jerez in 1999, was tempted to return a few years later with a satellite Honda team that needed a rider. "I told them to give me some time to think about it," said the Australian. "I don't think it would have taken me long to get up to speed - I hadn't forgotten how to ride a bike."

However, Doohan also knew he had nothing to prove, joking: "I was quite relieved when the team found someone, and I could then stop thinking about it!”
