Lorenzo excited ahead of “special race”

Second place on the grid for Sunday’s race at Jerez left the Fiat Yamaha rider satisfied as he bids to please the home fans.

An extremely close MotoGP qualifying session at the Gran Premio bwin de España left the top ten riders separated by less than a second, with Fiat Yamaha’s Jorge Lorenzo securing second spot on the starting grid.

Lorenzo was consistently fast in practice early on Saturday and after leading for a period in qualifying was eventually beaten to a third successive premier class pole at Jerez by fellow Spaniard Dani Pedrosa, who was 0.285s faster.

"I was very fast this morning and I hoped I would be again this afternoon, but we struggled a bit in the increased heat and couldn't keep up quite such a good pace,” said Lorenzo after qualifying. “This morning I could ride exactly how I wanted, which was a great feeling, but in qualifying it wasn't exactly the same. Anyway, my lap time is not so bad and we are on the front row, which is very important.”

There now lies in prospect a classic duel between Spaniards Lorenzo and Pedrosa, as well as the rest of the highly competitive field.

“I am very excited about tomorrow and I feel confident that I can have a good race in front of the Spanish fans. This is a very special track to race at and I can't wait to hear the crowd!” concluded Lorenzo.
