Ian Wheeler sizes up Assen raceday

The motogp.com reporter and co-commentator gives his view on who could be celebrating glory at the TIM TT Assen on Saturday. You can make your own predictions too with the Official Fantasy MotoGP game.

Jorge Lorenzo will be going for victory from pole position on Saturday at the TIM TT Assen after securing top spot on the starting grid for the second consecutive round, and motogp.com’s Ian Wheeler gave his thoughts on how the sixth round race could go following qualifying on Saturday.

“Going by Lorenzo’s speed and consistency of lap times today I think it’s going to take a lot of work from Casey Stoner in particular to stop him getting away, and to maybe hold him up and fight for the lead,” said Ian. “And I wouldn’t be surprised to see Ben Spies towards the end of the race coming through and looking to take another third place here at Assen.”

Andrea Iannone was strong in taking pole in the Moto2 class, and Ian hopes it will be a competitive race in the intermediate category. “I just hope that Iannone doesn’t do what he did at Mugello and disappear off at the front, because we want a race like Silverstone which was probably the best Moto2 race so far,” Ian explained.

“If you’re looking for somebody from the second row to spring a surprise, my money would be on Tom Lüthi,” he added.

Finally, looking at the 125cc class where Marc Márquez will be aiming for a third straight win, Ian added: “I think Márquez will be standing on the top step of the podium tomorrow afternoon, and if anybody can stop him I think it will be Nico Terol.”
