De Puniet secures sixth despite costly start

The LCR Honda rider started his second straight race from the front row of the grid at Assen and scored his third consecutive sixth place.

Randy de Puniet matched his impressive Silverstone display at the TIM TT Assen on Saturday by qualifying in second place and finishing the race in sixth position, as he continued to close in on fifth place in the Championship standings.

Despite a bad start which saw De Puniet drop four places he battled throughout the race with Andrea Dovizioso for fifth, eventually taking sixth and continuing what is proving to be an impressive season for the LCR Honda rider and team.

“After a positive qualifying lap time I made a bad a start from second place on the grid, because I dropped the clutch too quickly when doing a big wheelie,” explained De Puniet. “After that I overtook many riders. Unfortunately I had some issues with the front tyre at the beginning of the race so I decided to change my riding style a little bit to keep the pace.”

De Puniet, who now has 56 points in sixth place, continued: “In the middle of the race I caught Dovizioso and Spies when they were starting a close battle and I had fun. On the last lap I tried to overtake Dovizioso again but went too wide in the last corner. Anyway, we are very pleased about this result and this weekend because we maintain sixth position in the classification.”
