Simoncelli repeats top ten form

The rookie of the San Carlo Honda Gresini Team’s season continues to show promising progress, even if he was not totally satisfied with ninth place at Assen.

Marco Simoncelli carried the San Carlo Honda Gresini Team challenge alone at the TIM TT Assen on Saturday while team-mate Marco Melandri sat out the round six race with a dislocated shoulder, and the rookie finished the race in ninth place.

Having gradually improved his results race by race Simoncelli’s ninth place may have been a lower finish than his season’s best of seventh at Silverstone last time out, but another top-ten finish was an admirable performance from the Italian.

Simoncelli was less satisfied however and said: “It has been a particularly difficult day today. After practice I was hoping for a different kind of race but it didn't go to plan. I knew something wasn't right from the start because the feeling wasn't as good as yesterday, the rear tyre didn't have the same grip and from the first lap I was taking risks. I decided to pull the oars into the boat and get to the line in the best position possible.”

The 23 year-old had hoped for higher but is now looking ahead to Catalunya, where he hopes to repeat his best qualification so far of eighth which was achieved at Assen.

“It is a top-ten finish but we wanted more today,” he continued. “It is a shame but on the plus side we did a good job just to get the bike to the finish. Now we go to Barcelona and I hope we can build on the good qualifying practice we had yesterday.”
