Morales to replace injured Pons at Montmeló

The 31 year-old will step in for the injured Tenerife 40 Pons rider at the Gran Premi Aperol de Catalunya this weekend.

Carmelo Morales will ride in place of the injured Axel Pons for the Tenerife 40 Pons Moto2 team at the Gran Premi Aperol de Catalunya this weekend, due to the latter’s withdrawal through injury.

Pons suffered a fractured radius in his right arm after a fall in the qualifying session at Assen last Friday, and has been told he could need up to three weeks recovery before riding again. That has led to the team calling on 31 year-old Morales, currently competing in the Moto2 category of the Spanish National Championship, to ride for them this weekend.

“It’s a shame I am making my World Championship debut due to the injury of another rider, and it’s not the way I imagined it would be. I hope Axel returns to full fitness as soon as possible and I wish him luck,” said Morales, twice a Spanish Extreme champion and holder of two European Superstock 1000 titles.

“I’m very happy to have the opportunity to ride, and I never thought it would come with Sito Pons. I am very grateful for this. From what I’ve been able to see from the outside the Pons Kalex looks good and they have great experience in this team. I don’t think it’ll be a handicap that this is my first time on the bike, or that the tyres are different from the Spanish Championship. I’m looking forward to Friday and taking advantage of this opportunity.”

Sito Pons said: “It’s a shame Axel can’t participate because we had high hopes of a good result at Catalunya, which would have given him the confidence to compete at the front regularly. It’s important we replace Axel for our home race and we believe Carmelo Morales is the best option and can get the best result.”
