Jorge Lorenzo was on top in FP1 at Montmeló on Friday as he sets about trying to take a third straight win this weekend, and commentator Nick Harris believes that second fastest in the session Casey Stoner could cause the Spaniard a problem or two as he tries to achieve that feat.

“It was business as usual for Jorge Lorenzo, but good to see Casey Stoner on the pace,” said Nick. “It was a typical Stoner session: not too many laps but right on the pace. He says he has not got any problems at the moment with the arm pump that was an issue at Assen and Silverstone. I think he’s the only many who can really challenge Lorenzo here, and maybe Dani Pedrosa. We want to see both them do well as we want to see a good race, but Lorenzo is going to be a very difficult man to beat.”

Ben Spies was an impressive fifth in the hour-long practice as he approached another track he has not ridden before.

“He never ceases to amaze,” stated Nick. “It doesn’t seem to make any difference whether he knows a circuit or not. He knew Assen and was fourth, and he along with everyone else didn’t know Silverstone and was third in the race. He’s already being speculated on as riding for the Fiat Yamaha team for next season, and he has been absolutely superb. I don’t know if he’ll challenge for a podium here, but he’ll be around that fifth or sixth place all the way through.”
