Second row mission accomplished for Spies

Second row mission accomplished for Spies

The Monster Yamaha Tech 3 rider was again impressive on track at Catalunya as he took fifth spot in qualifying for Sunday’s race.

Ben Spies had another highly productive session at Montmeló on Saturday afternoon as he qualified in fifth place for the Gran Premi Aperol de Catalunya, on a track he rode for the first time in yesterday’s first practice.

Soaring temperatures hit 35ºC with the track peaking at 53ºC as the hour-long session tested both the durability of the bikes and riders, but testament to Spies’ determination was the fact that he set his best time of 1’42.710 (+0.664s off pole holder Jorge Lorenzo) on his 30th and final lap to leap up the timesheet.

In preparation for Sunday’s 25-lap race Spies also put in a long run to best prepare himself, and was pleased with how his QP went. He said: “We got caught up one time and were slowed down a little but, but we went out and did a 20-lap stint on a tyre to see how it would react in the heat and were relatively happy with it. We need to make a couple of small changes but I came in, got the softer tyres and went out and got on the second row, so that was our mission for qualifying this weekend. We knew coming to a track I didn’t know that it was going to be difficult, but we did it.”

Largely unaffected by the high temperatures, Spies felt fine and enjoyed the session but highlighted the need for lasting grip in the race.

“Physically it’s not too bad,” he stated. “I felt great doing the 20-lap stint, just the bike moves around a bit because it’s got that greasy feel with the tyres. It’s going to be who can be quick from laps 14 to 25. You’re going to have to have grip but also maintain it all the way to the end, so that’s how the race is going to be won.”

Having taken third and fourth place in his last two races expectations of the 25 year-old continue to be high, but he is maintaining a feet-on-the-floor approach as he keeps his own in check.

“Right now we’re definitely lacking a little bit for a podium, but if we hit everything on song and we get lucky, put in good laps, a top five is possible. Top eight is our goal, that’s where I think we’re at but we’re not looking too bad,” concluded Spies.
