Lorenzo laps fastest in second practice

The World Championship leader set the best time of the final practice ahead of qualifying at Laguna Seca, 0.063s ahead of Casey Stoner with Dani Pedrosa also in the top three.

Jorge Lorenzo accepted Casey Stoner’s challenge at the Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix by setting the fastest time of the second practice on Saturday with a hot lap of 1’21.763, although his effort was 0.064s off the Ducati Team rider’s best time from the first session on Friday.

Fiat Yamaha rider Lorenzo improved on his own day one time by almost two-tenths as he posted his effort on his 19th of 30 laps, with Stoner’s best lap of the second practice – 1’21.826 – keeping a close tab on the Spaniard and putting the Australian second.

Dani Pedrosa picked up his pace and went third quickest at just five-hundredths behind Stoner, making him the final rider under 1’22” in the session, with his Repsol Honda team-mate Andrea Dovizioso next up on the timesheet with a 1’22.166.

Monster Yamaha Tech 3 rider and yesterday’s fastest American Ben Spies was once more the quickest home rider as his final lap – 1’22.293 – of the hour pushed him up to fifth, 0.041s ahead of Valentino Rossi (Fiat Yamaha) in sixth as the Italian continues to find his level on a track which is demanding plenty from his recovering body.

The top ten was completed by Colin Edwards (Monster Yamaha Tech3), Nicky Hayden (Ducati Team), Héctor Barberá (Páginas Amarillas Aspar) and Aleix Espargaró (Pramac Racing).

Mika Kallio (Pramac Racing) had the only crash of the session just eight minutes in, when he slid out at turn nine. The Finn was uninjured and returned to the track shortly after to set the 15th fastest time of the session. The riders return to the track for qualifying at 1.55pm local time.
