De Puniet completes cautious first Brno ride

The LCR Honda rider was back on his MotoGP bike less than four weeks after breaking his leg, as he completed the first practice session at the Cardion ab Grand Prix Czech Republic.

Randy de Puniet’s incredible return to action was completed at Brno on Friday when the Frenchman rode in the first practice session of round ten. Battling pain and some discomfort the LCR Honda rider set a best lap of 2’00.184 as he focused on easing his body back into the demands of riding his RC212V.

Displaying great determination and a disregard for the pain his recovering left leg was causing him De Puniet evaluated the hour-long practice in a positive manner, and was delighted to be back on his machine so soon after his injury.

“I knew it would not be easy so this is exactly what I was expecting,” said De Puniet of the session. “Everybody thinks I came back too early but I feel fit even though my leg aches, especially when changing gear.”

De Puniet is confident things will only get better as the weekend progresses. He continued: “I think I can improve my physical condition session by session and hopefully the pain will be less and less. Today I did not take any painkillers and I unfortunately had a small high side after few laps which hurt my leg. That was very painful! The guys moved the shift pedal to make me more comfortable and I am confident we can improve step by step.”

The 28 year-old rode to tenth place in last year’s Brno race as he made his return from a broken ankle, and will be hoping for a similarly encouraging result on Sunday as he aims to continue his impressive 2010 campaign.
